House of Lords Advocacy

In March 2022, The House of Lords debated Amendment 155a tabled by Lord Shipley proposing a model of residence-based voting rights based on council tax payment eligibility.

Peers from different parties spoke in favour of the amendment. We wish to see residence-based voting rights in these political parties’ manifestos and soon made into a reality so everyone can have a vote.

Support from mayors

We have been working with directly-elected mayors on the campaign for residence-based voting rights.

The voice of mayors is of great symbolic and practical value. Even though they do not have the power to change legislation, they want to see all their residents participating in local elections. Here are the mayors that have added their voice to the #OurHomeOurVote campaign.

Dr Nik Johnson, Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Mayor

Caroline Woodley, Hackney Mayor

Jamie Driscoll, North of Tyne Mayor

Damien Egan, Lewisham Mayor

What do the political parties say?

We have made great strides promoting residence-based voting rights to many politicians.

Here are our key achievements with political parties and where they stand on the extension of the vote.

Labour Party

In the 2021 Labour Party Conference, Leader of the Labour Party, Keir Starmer MP, said he is in

“favour of voting rights for everybody who has contributed to our society”.

This position has subsequently been endorsed by the Labour Party’s National Policy Forum.

Labour MP Alex Norris proposed an amendment to the Elections Bill asking for the right to vote to be extended to all settled residents in General Elections.

Many other Labour-led local authorities have proposed our template motion on residence-based voting rights. Similarly, MPs, councillors, and Prospective Party Candidates also have endorsed our campaign.
