Have you registered to vote?

Registering to vote isn’t just important, it’s vital to democracy.

Unsure if you have the right to vote? Use your CanIVote tool to find out!

Voter Registration FAQs

  • When registering to vote, you’ll need to provide the following information, so it’s good to keep it handy before you start.

    • Your current and previous address

    • Your phone number and email

    • Your nationality (You also may need to include information about your arrival date if you’re from some EU countries)

    • Your age and date of birth

    • Your National Insurance Number

Once you have all this - you’re all set! Follow the link, and get registering.

  • In short - UK citizens and residents with indefinite leave to remain from Commonwealth countries have the right to vote in both local and national elections.

However there are many other exceptions, and in Wales and Scotland all residents no matter where they’re from can vote in local and parliamentary elections!

To find out your own voting eligibility, use our handy CanIVote tool and scroll down to the bottom of the page to check out our graphic explaining voter eligibility across nations and election types.

  • When you register to vote, you will be asked if you want your name to appear on the Open Register - you do not need to click yes to still be able to register to vote.

The Open Register is used by organisations (like MDP!) to know who is voting, but it is not a requirement to be a registered voter. It is a list of all registered voters in the UK.

  • Tell us about it! And more importantly VOTE! Make sure you’re subscribed to MDP’s mailing list and we’ll keep you up to date on upcoming elections across the UK.

  • To vote in the UK, you can either apply for a postal vote or go to a polling station on election day.

If you’re not voting by mail, you will need to bring an accepted photo ID to vote - read more about what type of ID to bring here.

Let us know when you’re registered!

We want to know when you’re a registered voter - it means the world to us that you’ll be voting.

Keep us posted, and let us know if you want to help other people get registered too!
